Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if there is no sun that day?

Even when the sun isn’t shining the panels will still be able to produce some power although they won’t be as efficient as when the sun is out. We’ll still be able to produce some of your power but not all of it. The good news is that you’re home will still have electricity. It will simply switch back over to your utility company and use the power from the grid.

I heard that the electric company had to pay me for surplus power. Is that true?

Maybe. Some utility companies will pay their customers for the extra power that is produced from the panels but it is dependent upon their company policies. To find out what the policy of your utility company is please contact your solar consultant or your account administrator.

How long does it take to install a solar system?

It depends on the size of your home and the size of your solar PV system. In most circumstances we can install it in one day. However there are times where it takes us longer. Please contact your solar consultant or your account administrator to get an estimated installation time for your system.

How does a solar system affect my roof integrity?

It won’t affect it at all. We install the panels on the frame of your home and not directly on the roof itself. Before doing this our engineers will review the information our site surveyor retrieved from your home and after approval you can rest assured that it can handle the weight load of the panels. If for any reason, during the course of our agreement with you, there is any problem then our insurance will cover the damage done at no cost to you.

Can my HOA or neighbors prevent me from installing a solar system?

Typically no. Most states have laws protecting homeowners from their HOA declining them from installing a PV solar system. However it is rare in states that don’t have these laws for an HOA to decline your home from going solar.

Is solar a viable option in cold climates?

Yes! As long as the sun shines, then your climate is a viable place for you to go solar!

I don’t plan on being in my home for 20 years, why would I add solar?

Regardless of how long you’ll be in your home it always makes sense to go solar for many reasons. Financially, you will be saving money the first month you go solar and every month you are in the home. You’ll also be able to sell your home for more as a result because it is a more energy efficient home. Lastly you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint by not using the dirty energy that the utility companies currently provide. An affect that will not only be felt by you but by your children and grandchildren.

Does my home need to meet any special requirements to install a solar system?

Every home that goes solar needs to be surveyed by one of our trained professionals. During that inspection, they will look at your roof, the electrical system in your home, the frame of your home and lastly how much sun you get on your roof. Most homes will qualify as long they get enough sun. However, sometimes we discover small problems but we will always strive to deliver a solution so you can still enjoy the benefits of going solar at your home.

How reliable are your systems?

Very! We use the highest quality products to insure that your system is always working at its peak performance. Sometimes we do need to service the system to ensure that it is producing the amount of energy it is capable of. We monitor the system and know when that is needed so we will contact you if the occasion ever arrises.

Does it include a warranty?

Yes. The system is warranted during our entire agreement with you.

How do I know when my system is producing energy and how much it is producing?

We have a customer portal that you can visit to monitor the production of your system. It shows, in real time, how much energy is being produced so you can rest assured that your system is producing optimally. Talk to your solar consultant or your account manager to receive instructions on how to login today!

Why do you need to know my energy consumption over each of the last 12 months?

We strive to design a system for your home that will not only produce an accurate amount of energy but save you the most amount of money possible. To do this we need to know what your consumption habits are by looking at your most recent utility bills. That will allow us to build the most efficient system for your home.

What happens when my solar energy plan ends?

You have different options depending on which solar plan you choose for your home. Talk to your solar consultant to discuss what options you will have.

Will my system increase the value of my home?

Yes! The amount depends on the market conditions at the time you sell your home, the area of the country you live and the amount of money you are saving. However, most homes will appraise anywhere from $5,000-$15,000 more.

Will I have power during a blackout?

In order to satisfy safety regulations solar PV systems that are connected to the grid will automatically shut off during a power outage. The reason for this is to protect anyone working to get the power back on in your area. Since the panels are connected to the grid they would be back feeding power onto it and if someone down the road was working on the power lines he could potentially be electrocuted.

Do I need permission from the local utility to connect my solar system to the grid?

Yes. Our team knows and understands the process that is needed to get your solar PV system operating. We will work with you to make sure that all paperwork and permissions have been filed before you go solar.

What will a solar system do to my property taxes?

Since you don’t own the system it will not increase your property taxes.

What size system do I need?

We will determine the final system size after we survey your home.

What is net metering?

Net metering is a process that counts the amount of kilowatt hours that your solar PV system produces.
